The best way to buy used cars in Japan is to purchase directly from Japanese car auctions in the same way Japanese used car dealers do.

There are now approximately 90 Major Japanese car auction houses which are held every week, and there are in total some 120 authorized car auction houses for licensed car dealers in Japan. More than 90 % of trading in the used car market in Japan is now through these authorized car auctions. Bidding and purchasing cars directly from the authorized car auctions means reasonable prices, a large variety of quality cars to choose from, and a reliable car condition grading system.

The authorized car auction houses in Japan are guided by the Japanese automobile fair trade council and act as mediators for car dealer members. The participation of authorized car auctions is only for licensed dealer members who have an authorized Japanese car dealer license and who are strictly judged by each auction house. Each car auction house has licensed car assessors (Inspectors) who strictly inspect each exhibited car. The assessors allocate a car condition grade to each car and make a detailed report on the condition of the car available to member bidders through the car auction data system.

Authorized Japanese car auction are held weekly and Only member car dealers are allowed to enter the car auction. The detailed car auction data (car condition sheet and pictures) are released from a few days before the auction day. Each auction is totally computerized and member buyers compete by operating buttons. The starting price is set for each car and the price increases by JPY3,000 (most auction house) on each bid until the highest bid greater than the member exhibiter's selling price is reached. The purchased car must be taken out of the auction house within a few days after the auction. All payments to the auctioneer must be finished before the next auction (following week) is held, otherwise the member buyer loses the right to bid on further cars at auctions until all past payments have been completed.
